Welcome to Soldiers' / For Your Safety

At Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) we are committed to providing a safe environment for our patients, visitors, staff, volunteers and physicians. Safety is one of the key strategic priorities set by our Board of Directors. Below you will find information about your role in patient safety during your hospital stay.

Please take a moment to read our booklet on Patient Safety at OSMH.

It’s Your Healthcare – Be Involved

It is important that you know your rights and responsibilities when it comes to your care. Here are some helpful resources from our partners in healthcare and patient safety:

Balloons/Latex Products

To ensure the safety of our patients, staff and visitors, who may be sensitive to latex products or have a latex allergy, Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) is a balloon/latex free environment. We ask any patient that does have a latex allergy/sensitivity to notify your healthcare team upon admission. Foil balloons, however, are acceptable.

Cell phones

All cell phones must be turned off in the hospital because they can interfere with medical equipment and put our patients’ safety at risk. There are pay phones located in the main lobby, as well as outside the emergency department and oncology clinic.

Fire Safety

As mandated by the Ontario Fire Code, the hospital is required to conduct regular fire drills to ensure we maintain a safe environment for our patients, staff and visitors. Remain calm when you hear the hospital’s fire alarm or see our staff taking part in a fire drill. Staff will direct you in accordance with the hospital’s Fire Code as required.

Just Clean Your Hands

Hand washing, when done correctly, is the single most effective way to prevent the spread of communicable diseases. Good hand washing technique is easy to learn and can significantly reduce the spread of infectious diseases among both children and adults.

OSMH is proud to be a participant in the Ministry of Health and Long term Care's Just Clean Your Hands initiative. The program is designed to build a culture where infection prevention and control is everyone's business - staff physicians, patients and visitors alike. Please remember to clean your hands on the way into the hospital and take advantage of the many hand-cleaning stations throughout the hospital during your visit. Also, be sure to clean your hands when you are leaving the hospital.

Security

Onsite security is available 24-hours a day, seven days a week. You may contact our security desk at ext. 3272 if you have questions, concerns or need to report an incident.

Scent-free Air

Scented personal products like perfume, cologne, aftershave, hairspray, deodorant or lotion can cause serious problems for patients, staff and visitors, especially those with asthma, allergies, migraines, and environmental illness. To keep a healthy environment, we ask that you wear only unscented personal products when you are at the hospital.

Smoke-Free

OSMH takes great pride in promoting healthy and active living. In keeping with our priorities of creating a healthy environment for our staff and patients, smoking is prohibited on all OSMH property. Smoking is also prohibited in the hospital, in accordance with provincial law.
