New streamlined scheduling and registration process takes effect December 3rd at OSMH

Tuesday, November 06, 2018

Patients arriving for appointments at OSMH will be registered through a new centralized intake process starting Monday, December 3rd.   The change is designed to enhance the patient experience, improve data quality, increase efficiency and standardize processes.

The biggest change for patients is where they start once arriving on site.  Instead of registering directly in the department of their appointment, they will instead check in at one of three registration points strategically located at main entries.

“Our current system with 16 different registration areas is inconsistent in the way patient information is gathered and processed,” said Melanie Moore, Manager of CPRS (Centralized Patient Scheduling and Registration).   “This change will allow us to adopt a standard approach similar to way many other hospitals now perform these tasks.”

The three areas where patients will register include the main entrance, outpatient services entrance and the emergency entrance.   Most hospital departments will adapt to this change on December 3rd but a few, including Paediatric Outpatients, and Dialysis, will changeover in April 2019 as part of a second phase.

“It will take some time for staff and patients to grow accustomed to the new system so we are applying additional resources at the beginning to assist, including volunteers and signage,” said Moore.

“Similar to our transition to an electronic medical record system a few years ago, we appreciate the public’s understanding and patience as we adapt to this new methodology.”
