(Tuesday, December 6, 2016 – Orillia, ON) – Recognizing the value and importance of strong community partnerships, Orillia Soldiers’ Memorial Hospital (OSMH) held an Appreciation Breakfast Tuesday for local partner organizations that have helped enhance the flow of patients through the healthcare system.
That improvement is evident by a significant reduction in the number of patients waiting in hospital for more appropriate care settings. From March 2015 to October 2016, the average number of beds at OSMH occupied by ALC (Alternate Level of Care) patients has dropped from 36 to 11. ALC patients are individuals who no longer require the acute care services of a hospital but remain in hospital because access to the next, most appropriate care setting, such as long term care, is unavailable.
“The downward trend in our ALC numbers means that patients are getting to the right care more quickly than before, and that’s great news for patients and their families,” said Pat Campbell, OSMH President and CEO.
On an annual basis, the average number of beds occupied by ALC patients at OSMH has dropped from 28.2 in 2014/15, to 26.7 in 2015/16, with a very achievable target of 24.8 for the current year. Seven months into this fiscal year, OSMH is currently tracking at 21.3.
“This isn’t something we’ve been able to accomplish on our own,” said Campbell. “Over the past several years, the hospital has been working closely with a number of community organizations to increase capacity and develop strategies that would enable patients to move more quickly into different levels of care.”
